SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 13

Fanning, Edgell, Helmick, Snyder, Plymale, Jackson, Craigo,
Chafin, Sharpe, Mitchell and Tomblin, Mr, President)
Requesting the Division of Highways name the section of I-64 from
Beckley to the Virginia border the "Hulett C. Smith Highway".

Whereas, The Honorable Hulett C. Smith proudly served his
nation during World War II as a Lieutenant in the United States
Navy and served as Lieutenant Commander in the United States Naval
Reserves; and

Whereas, The keen business savvy of the Honorable Hulett C.
Smith initiated his service as President of the Home Insurance
Agency of Beckley. In addition, he has served as a member of
numerous boards, commissions and other professional organizations;
and

Whereas, The Honorable Hulett C. Smith served as chairman of
the state Democratic Executive Committee from 1956 to 1961; and

Whereas, The Honorable Hulett C. Smith served as the first
Commissioner of the West Virginia Department of Commerce from 1961
to 1963; and

Whereas, The Honorable Hulett C. Smith was elected the 27th Governor of West Virginia on November 3, 1964. His inauguration
was held on January 18, 1965; and

Whereas, The outstanding leadership of the Honorable Hulett C.
Smith during his term as governor is evidenced by myriad worthwhile
projects, conceived and executed by him for the benefit of the
citizens of West Virginia; and

Whereas, It is fitting that a tribute be made to such an
outstanding West Virginian as the Honorable Hulett C. Smith, 27th
Governor of West Virginia; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

That the Legislature hereby requests the Division of Highways
name the section of I-64 from Beckley to the Virginia border the
"Hulett C. Smith Highway" as a tribute to one of West Virginia's
finest chief executives; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is requested
to have made and be placed signs identifying the section of I-64
from Beckley to the Virginia border as the "Hulett C. Smith
Highway"; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the Senate is hereby
directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Secretary of
the Department of Transportation.
